A meeting of the Central & Eastern European Developers’ Sustainability Forum in Warsaw last month backed the introduction of the BREEAM assessment system into Europe.
The group which includes consultants as well as developers discussed possible pilot projects as BRE Global seeks developers in Europe who wish to assess their projects during the scheme’s first experimental year. BRE Global will also be running training courses for consultants wishing to become international BREEAM assessors.
AIG/Lincoln European director David Lawrence said the response from developers, consultants and environmental experts in Europe had been enthusiastic.
“Environmental certification is an integral part of AIG/Lincoln’s development process and it has been a pleasure to work closely with BRE Global over the past two years and to contribute to the content of the new BREEAM Europe certification through our pilot projects,” he said. “It is a document that is very much needed in the region for developers to benchmark and improve their environmental standards.”
BREEAM is also being used by the International Council of Shopping Centres for pilot retail projects in Europe and by Toyota for its European retail operations.
