Retrofitting existing homes much more important than eco towns, say MPs
Categories for this story: UK Policy, Housing

Government housing policy risks neglecting the climate and environmental impact of the UK’s 25 million-plus existing houses, MPs have concluded.

In a hard-hitting report – Existing Housing and Climate Change – released on 2 April, the influential Communities and Local Government Select Committee calls on ministers to “engage fully” with cutting carbon emissions from the existing stock, as well as seeking to make future housing more environmentally friendly through zero-carbon housing regulations and the construction of Eco towns. The report notes a “tilt back in the direction of existing stock.”
