Sustainable shop construction at John Lewis
Categories for this story: Energy Efficiency, Commercial Property

The 18-month collaboration between the John Lewis Partnership and Forum for the Future on sustainable building has generated a Sustainable Construction Framework for the retail sector.

Announcing the move Partnership chair-man Sir Stuart Hampson said it is founded on a vision which unambiguously defines its purpose: comfortable, efficient buildings, low operating costs and reduced environmental impact. He said it lays down principles for delivering new and refurbished shops at each stage of the construction life cycle.

“Achieving these objectives depends on a partnership approach with developers and contractors – all buying in to the same ends,” he said. “We’re particularly pleased to have received support and advice from Wates and from Land Securities in drawing up this Framework.”

He said some of the principles have already been employed on refurbishing the Oxford Street store whose like-for-like carbon dioxide emissions will be down 24% through use of more natural light and ventilation and new escalators, boilers, chillers, catering equipment and lighting.

The target is to reduce CO2 emissions as a percentage of sales by 10% by 2010 (compared to 2001-2) and improve energy efficiency by 5% by 2008 and 10% by 2013 (against 2003-4). By October all John Lewis and Waitrose shop energy will come from wind, hydro, wave and biomass.
