CEEQUAL scheme take up increases
Categories for this story: Standards

Take up of the CEEQUAL scheme, which aims to replicate the BREEAM standard for buildings in the civil engineering sector, has now reached 114 assessments on projects collectively worthy £3.5bn.

CEEQUAL was launched in 2003 by the Institution of Civil Engineers, BRE and CIRIA, together with other industry organisations. It aims to improve the environmental performance of civils work in project specification, design and construction.
“To positively influence the activities of another £1bn worth of civil engineering construction so quickly is a great encouragement for all involved in the awards scheme and great credit to those undertaking important civil engineering projects in the UK with the intention of improving their environmental performance,” said CEEQUAL chief executive Roger Venables.

CEEQUAL uses a points-scoring based assessment which can be used for any civil engineering project and includes aspects such as the use of water, energy and land as well as ecology, landscape, neighbour nuisance, archaeology, waste management and amenity. Awards are made to projects which go beyond legal and environmental minima to achieve distinctive environmental standards. To date 31 awards have been made.

The scheme’s management team and technical advisory group have begun work on a fourth version of the manual for projects. A scheme for term contracts will be finalized in parallel.
