The Association of British Insurers has warned that inadequate investment in sea defences along Britain’s east coast will leave it vulnerable to a £16bn flood. A report, Coastal Flood Risk – Thinking for Tomorrow, Acting Today, says a 40cm rise in sea levels could happen as soon as 2040, putting 130,000 properties at risk of flooding. This includes 24,000 in Southend and 19,000 in Hull.
