Infrastructure funds should be competitively managed, Lib Dems say
Categories for this story: UK Policy, Funding/Grants

Liberal Democrat shadow chancellor Vince Cable has set out proposals for a National Infrastructure Bank to fund sustainable infrastructure and create jobs.

He told The Civilisation Congress 2009 that the UK’s infrastructure is rated 34th in the world, and that it needs investment urgently.

“The Government has already announced Infrastructure UK,” he acknowledged, “but the last thing that we need is yet another advisory body talking shop.”

He explained that a National Infrastructure Bank would work in a similar way to the European Investment Bank, by leveraging public funds with private investment.
