Moss used for green roof
Categories for this story: Energy Efficiency, Technology, Companies and Bodies

A new green roof technology designed to be so light that no extra constructional support is needed has been launched by Icopal.

Its Icomoss system weighs 20kg/m² when saturated, around a quarter the weight of grass or plant-based systems, and consists of a 10mm green roof mat impregnated with mosses which can be attached to bituminous roof coverings.

The single-layer system comprises a water-storing fibre fleece, a three-dimensional fibre layer to anchor the moss and a layer of the mosses themselves. Mosses do not have roots so only a thin mat is needed to support them, but they have insulating properties and extend the life of the bituminous membrane by protecting it against temperature fluctuations.

It is being used in the Netherlands where 20,000m² is being laid on 400 homes.
