The Green Party would prioritise the low carbon economy if in power, according to an alternative Queen’s speech written by Green Party leader and MP for Brighton and Hove Caroline Lucas, published by Channel 4 News.
Rather than giving the deficit reduction top billing, as in the Government-written speech delivered on 25 May, Ms Lucas’s version says: “My government's overriding priority is to modernise the British economy for a low-carbon future, to create an economy more balanced between manufacturing and services, more resilient in the face of financial crises, where wealth is more equitably distributed and the more vulnerable in society are offered greater protection.”
Ms Lucas would bring in a bill to introduce an emergency investment package which would bring public transport improvements and fare reductions of up to 10%, free insulation for all British homes, transform Britain's renewable energy sector and encourage zero waste across the UK.
A government led by Ms Lucas would also set targets to cut UK CO2 emissions by 90% of 1990 levels by 2030, and seek global and European collaboration on tackling climate change.
