A new teaching block and library development at Loreto College, Manchester, has been awarded the 2009 BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standard for further education buildings.
James & Taylor and architects Taylor Young combined a 30,000 litre rainwater harvesting tank, a 270m² photovoltaic array, 30m² of solar evacuated tubes, 128m deep vertical ground source heat pumps. On the exterior, Moeding Alphaton cladding finished to match the existing college buildings and a green sedum roof planted with native species are prominent.
James & Taylor sales manager Andrew Barstow said: “Increasingly we are receiving briefs for projects that demand a high environmental standard across all aspects of the building process: from the use of sustainable materials to developing a finished project that has a low impact on the environment. As a company we have a long-standing commitment to environmental best practice and are delighted that these efforts have been recognised by BREEAM.”
