Kier North Tyneside is carrying out major refurbishments of nearly 50 homes in Shiremoor, North Tyneside, which it hopes will collectively save over 100 tonnes of carbon in the next year.
The retrofitting will take place on prefabricated concrete homes and involve cladding with three inch insulation board covered with brick slips and replacing doors, windows and roofs where necessary. It is hoped that each home will save 2.1 tonnes of carbon.
Kier North Tyneside operations manager Charles Rayner said: “All work will be carried out with consideration to environmental requirements in the management of waste and recycling materials. The materials themselves will be purchased with consideration to their environmental long-term sustainability.”
The joint venture company, formed between North Tyneside Council and Kier Building Maintenance, hopes to roll the project out to the rest of North Tyneside. |
