Guidance to help the health sector minimise waste and reduce costs on its building work has been published by the Waste & Resources Action Programme with the NHS Sustainable Development Unit and the Department of Health.
Cutting the Costs of Waste in NHS Construction: Advice for NHS Trusts as Construction Clients is available as a free download from WRAP and covers new build, refurbishment and maintenance.
“Research undertaken by WRAP shows that tackling construction waste can reduce project costs by 0.2% to 2% of construction value, varying by project type,” said WRAP clients and policy programme manager David Moon.
The guide includes advice on how to engage with designers and contractors to reduce waste right through the process and gives a template to inform teams of required outcomes. These can be embedded in NHS sustainable development management plans and the guide can also help draft estate management plans, tenders and contracts.
