Gas and electricity suppliers will have to install “smart” meters providing real time information to all but small businesses over the next five years under proposals announced by the Department for Business Enterprise & Regulatory Reform.
The consultation examines how far energy use could be cut by using smart meters and real time visual display meters in homes and businesses. These will enable them to see how much energy they are using and what it costs when individual appliances are turned on. They allow suppliers to communicate direct with customers, remove the need for meter readings and provide accurate bills without estimates. They may allow customers to access data on their energy usage via the internet or digital TV.
“It is vital that we make best use of this emerging technology that will not only help cut our energy use but reduce our bills too,” said energy minister Malcolm Wickes.
Under the proposals, bills would contain enhanced information including historical comparisons. Real time VDUs would be fitted to new meters from next year and to all households requesting them between 2008 and 2010. Responses are required by 31 October
