UK’s first CCS plant opens
Categories for this story: Energy Efficiency
The UK’s first live trial of a carbon capture and storage system has been opened in West Yorkshire.

The £21m pilot project was opened by energy and climate change minister Chris Huhne. The plan has been launched by SSE at its Ferrybridge power station, in collaboration with Vattenfall and Doosan Power Systems.

The plant is expected to capture over 100 tonnes of CO2 every day, and aims to demonstrate the performance of the amine compound used to capture carbon dioxide on a real flue gas stream. Researchers anticipate around 90% of CO2 will be captured.

“This flagship test programme represents an important milestone in the UK’s plans to develop CCS, and provides a critical bridge to meeting our long-term aim of cost competitive CCS deployment by the 2020s,” said Chris Huhne.

“This is the first operating carbon capture plant attached to a power station at this scale in the UK, and has benefited from more than £6m in public money. The investment will be invaluable to the wider commercial scale deployment of CCS by reducing uncertainty, driving down costs and developing the UK supply chain and skills.”

The year-long project is backed by £6.3 from the Department of Energy and Climate change, the Technology Strategy Board and Northern Way.
