Biomass health and safety guidance
Categories for this story: Energy Efficiency, UK Practice, Companies and Bodies

A new guide detailing health and safety when installing and operating biomass heat systems has been launched by the Combustion Engineer Association (CEA) and the Carbon Trust.

Written for clients, designers and those operating and maintaining commercial or industrial biomass systems, it intends to give the most up to date health and safety issues involved.

The guide is timed with the launch of the Renewable Heat Incentive late last year, which may mean an increase in uptake in the biomass heat market.

Daniel Sullivan, biomass heat accelerator project manager at the Carbon Trust said: “With the introduction of the Renewable Heat Incentive the biomass heat market is set to expand rapidly. We have developed this guide… to help new and existing players in the market design, install and operate the equipment to best practice health and safety standards.”

Adebayo Ige of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) added: “Considering health and safety in the design stage is fundamental to ensuring that equipment can be used and maintained safely. This document provides a useful grounding in the relevant health and safety considerations for anyone engaged in the development of biomass systems.”.
