Scottish councils to retain verification powers
Categories for this story: Energy Efficiency, UK Practice, Housing, Commercial Property
Scottish councils are to remain as the sole verifier of new homes and buildings in the country, a recent consultation has decided.

On consulting the issue, ministers have decided in December that they will not introduce private verifiers and will instead continue to use the council building standards departments, responsible for independently checking building work including design, construction and completion, to ensure all new buildings meet all relevant building regulations.

“Following consultation, I have decided that local authorities are still best placed to protect the public and to deliver the government’s key building standards objectives,” said minister for local government and planning, Derek Mackay. A new performance framework is to be introduced in May, according to Mr Mackay, which will focus on improving performance, predictability and customer service.
