The UK's greenhouse gas emissions rose by 3.1% between 2009-10 according to the latest statistical figures released by DECC.
The figures cover the six GHG's covered by the Kyoto protocol. The figures show that there was an estimated 590.4 MtCO2e in 2010, an increase from 572.5 MtCO2e in 2009.
“Emissions were up in 2010 because of the exceptionally cold weather and greater use of fossil fuels,” according to energy secretary Ed Davey. He reiterated that the increase wouldn't destabilise the UK's ability to reach its long-term emissions targets. The downturn in 2009 saw emissions fall by 8.7%.
Davey added: “It serves to underline the importance of the coalitions policies for insulating homes to cut bills and emissions and moving to greener alternative forms of energy.” |
