A competition has been launched in which streets across the nation will aim to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions. The campaign, run by British Gas, is entitled ‘Green Streets’.
Some 64 households in eight different cities were recruited to take part. Each ‘street’ of eight houses will receive a budget of £30,000 to spend on reducing their energy consumption through the use of better light bulbs, wind turbines and insulation over the course of a year. They will receive a full energy efficiency audit of their homes showing where they are wasting gas and electricity. A British Gas ‘green energy expert’ will work with the households in developing an action plan to help them change their behaviour and reduce emissions.
The street which cuts down its CO2 emissions most significantly will be awarded £50,000 of energy-saving equipment to invest in a local community project.
