The Waste & Resources Action Plan has found £2.3m to fund an extra three-quarters of a million tonnes of aggregate recycling capacity each year.
WRAP is hoping to increase the proportion of recycled material in the 280mt a year of aggregates the UK construction industry currently uses and to reduce landfill. This will bring total WRAP support for aggregates recycling to £9.3m, supporting an annual 3.6mt.
“This capital competition supported the development of efficient aggregates processing infrastructure,” said WRAP aggregates capital project manager Mike Falconer. “The projects were selected as they met or exceeded the competition’s specific evaluation criterion and demonstrated that they would increase recovery rates and divert material from landfill.”
The new recipients include the Day Group which gets £471,060 towards a new washing plant and Raymond Brown Eco Bio which gets £334,560 towards the cost of a washing plant for crushed construction wastes. Commercial Recycling gets £324,646 for a new washing plant.
