While the Conservative and Labour annual Conferences held in Manchester and Liverpool respectively, hosted the usual array of fringe meetings showcasing the varied opinions of experts and lobbyists from the business and NGO communities, the conference platforms themselves had slim pickings on green issues this year.

The Government has agreed with the vast majority of the 31 recommendations made by the Environmental Audit Committee in its report* on the Green Investment Bank (GIB), published on 11 March. The response**, published in late July, builds on Business Secretary Vince Cable’s update to Parliament on the design of the GIB on 24 May.

The influential House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) has warned in its latest report that the Roadmap to a Green Economy – due for release this month - must demonstrate a “greater commitment to the green economy, and in doing so dispel any suggestion that, with its separate publication, it is an 'add-on' rather than an integral part of the Government's sustainable development plans.”

Ministers have started a fast-track review of large-scale solar PV because their growth was "not fully anticipated in the original Feed-in Tariffs (FITs) scheme and there is a risk that, if unchecked, such schemes could push FITs off trajectory and may make the spending review savings difficult," DECC energy efficiency minister Gregory Barker told Green MP Caroline Lucas as part of a series of written replies on FITs.

Sustainable development needs to be driven from the centre of Government by a minister and department with Whitehall-wide influence, and they must be capable of holding all departments to account for their sustainable development performance, as well as being able to encourage real commitment, warns Parliament’s sustainability watchdog, the Environmental Audit Committee. Ministers are considering recommendations from an interim report from the zero carbon hub on what standards should be achievable onsite for zero carbon homes, DECC energy minister Gregory Barker said in a written answer.
