A non-partisan examination of the Government’s ecotowns policy by highly respected environmental lawyers and specialists has praised efforts to further sustainable building and to explore possible benefits from New Town solutions where appropriate, but has uncovered serious legal and policy flaws in its seemingly rushed approach which could undermine the credibility of its current plans for ten eco towns.  The first assessment of eco-town project bidders by the 15-strong Eco towns Challenge Panel has revealed a largely unsatisfactory level of sustainability ambition among the shortlisted bids, with even the strongest needing improvement if they are to surpass other best practice existing or planned projects.
